Ministry of Coal launched Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) pilot project in Jharkhand

The Ministry of Coal has initiated India's first-ever pilot project for Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) at the Kasta coal block in Jamtara District, Jharkhand. Led by Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), this innovative project marks a significant step towards diversifying the coal sector. The UCG technology involves the in-situ gasification of coal to produce valuable gases like methane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. These gases can be utilized to create synthetic natural gas, chemical feedstocks for fuels, fertilizers, explosives, and other industrial applications.

The pilot project highlights the Ministry's commitment to promoting coal gasification, which allows for the utilization of coal resources that are otherwise uneconomical to mine. This groundbreaking initiative positions India as a leader in advanced coal gasification technologies.

Approved in December 2015, the Ministry of Coal's comprehensive policy framework for UCG aligns with the selection of the Kasta coal block for this technology. The project, managed by ECL in collaboration with CMPDI Ranchi and Ergo Exergy Technologies Inc. (EETI) from Canada, spans two years and consists of two phases. The first phase, which started on June 22, 2024, focuses on preparing a Technical Feasibility Report through borehole drilling and core testing. The second phase will involve coal gasification on a pilot scale.

Funded by the CIL R&D Board, this project exemplifies collaboration between Eastern Coalfields Ltd and Ergo Exergy as sub-implementing agencies. The successful execution of this pilot project is expected to transform India's energy sector, showcasing sustainable and efficient use of the country's coal resources.
